How we score Cape Town's health and wellness retreats and resorts
This guide ranks 100 health and wellness retreats and resorts across Cape Town using one composite score out of 100. The score is built entirely from measurable signals pulled from public review data and business listings. Nobody pays to move up the list, and the methodology below is the whole method, not a summary of it.
The five signals, heaviest first
Each business gets a score built from five weighted parts. We list them here in order of how much they count.
Sentiment: 28%
This is the single biggest factor, and deliberately so. A star average flattens everything into one number, and two retreats can sit at the same 4.3 stars while telling very different stories: one has a handful of scattered gripes, the other has a dozen recent reviews all describing the same issue, like a spa package that got cut short or a wellness program that didn't match what was advertised. You cannot see that pattern from a star count alone. Sentiment analysis reads what recent reviewers actually wrote and looks for repeated themes, both good and bad, so a business with consistent praise for its treatments or setting scores differently than one quietly accumulating the same complaint over and over.
Rating: 26%
The Google aggregate star rating still matters a great deal, since it reflects the broad, cumulative judgment of everyone who has left a review. It's weighted just below sentiment because a rating alone can't tell you what's driving it.
Volume: 20%
A retreat with 5 reviews and a retreat with 300 are not equally proven, even at the same average rating. We log-scale review volume so that going from 5 to 50 reviews matters more to the score than going from 500 to 550. This rewards businesses with a real track record without letting sheer size dominate everything else.
Recency: 13%
Wellness retreats change hands, change staff, and change quality over time. A burst of glowing reviews from three years ago tells you less than a modest number of reviews from the last few months. Recency weighting favors businesses that keep earning current feedback.
Completeness: 13%
We check whether a listing has a working phone number, a website, posted hours, and a full address. A retreat that makes it easy to check details and book with confidence scores better on this measure than one with gaps in basic information.
What this means for your search
Weighting sentiment and rating together at over half the score, with volume, recency, and completeness filling out the rest, is meant to mirror how a careful person would actually vet a wellness retreat: read the reviews, check the average, see how many people are behind it, confirm it's still getting attention, and make sure you can actually reach the place.
The honest limits
Businesses with only a few recent reviews cannot generate a statistically confident score, and we label those listings as low-confidence rather than pretend otherwise. We synthesize themes from reviews instead of republishing full text, and every listing links out to Google so you can read the original source yourself. Scores come only from this rubric and the public data behind it. They are never hand-edited. Where paid placement exists anywhere on this site, it is clearly labeled and has no effect on score or rank, and any list where picks or order involved editorial judgment says so directly on that page, such as our best spa and wellness retreats list.
Who publishes this guide
This directory is published by Eugene Digital Media. Eugene, the founder, is a digital marketer with over six years building online businesses, and started this project to help people find genuine health and wellness retreats and resorts in Cape Town and Johannesburg, ranked by quality rather than who pays the most. Every listing is built from published reviews and public business information and is checked monthly to keep it current. Research Lead Leo Osei maintains the rankings and oversees the editorial process behind this guide. Data across the directory refreshes monthly, and each listing carries a "last verified" stamp so you can see it's actively maintained rather than left to go stale.

FAQ
- How is the score calculated?
- It's a weighted composite of five signals: sentiment (28%), star rating (26%), review volume (20%), recency (13%), and listing completeness (13%). Each measures something different about a business's track record, and together they aim to reflect how a careful person would vet a retreat by hand.
- Why does sentiment matter more than the star rating?
- Two businesses can share the same star average while one has a run of recent complaints about the same specific problem. Reading what reviews actually say catches patterns that an average score alone hides.
- Can a business pay to rank higher?
- No. Scores come only from the rubric and public data described here and are never edited by hand. Where paid placement exists on this site it is always labeled, and it never changes a business's score or position.
- What does a low-confidence label mean?
- It means a business has too few recent reviews to produce a statistically reliable score. We still list it, but we flag it so you know to weigh that score with caution.
