What is yin yoga?

Yin yoga is a meditative practice where practitioners hold passive, often floor-based poses for extended periods, typically 3 to 5 minutes, to work into connective tissues like fascia and ligaments.

Unlike faster vinyasa or power styles, yin yoga asks you to arrive in a pose and stay there. Rather than actively engaging muscles, the practice uses gentle, gravity-assisted stretches held for several minutes at a time. This approach targets deeper layers of connective tissue, fascia, and ligaments that shorter, more dynamic practices may not reach.

The pacing invites a meditative quality. With minimal muscular effort and the time to settle, many practitioners find their breath deepens and their nervous system shifts toward relaxation. Sessions often feel less vigorous but more introspective, creating space for physical release paired with mental quietude.

Yin yoga sits at the gentler end of the wellness spectrum, making it popular at yoga and meditation retreats where deep relaxation and recovery are core aims. It suits anyone seeking to unwind tension, improve flexibility over time, or balance a more active exercise routine. The long holds and floor-based nature also make it accessible to those with injury concerns or anyone preferring a less strenuous approach to movement and mindfulness.
