What is Kundalini yoga?
Kundalini yoga is a spiritual practice that uses physical postures, controlled breathing (pranayama), and vocal chanting to activate and channel energy believed to rest at the base of the spine.
Kundalini yoga centers on the idea that dormant energy, called kundalini, sits coiled at the base of the spine and can be awakened and directed upward through deliberate practice. Unlike other yoga styles that emphasize alignment or flexibility alone, this tradition integrates three core elements: dynamic physical postures (asanas), controlled breathing techniques (pranayama), and rhythmic or mantra-based chanting.
The practice views the spine as an energy channel with seven chakras, or energy centers. By moving through sequences designed to stimulate and balance these points, practitioners aim to heighten awareness, release tension, and promote spiritual growth. The breathwork typically follows specific patterns to move energy intentionally, while chanting reinforces focus and vibration.
Many yoga and meditation retreats in Cape Town and beyond offer Kundalini classes as part of their wellness programs, often attracting those seeking deeper spiritual experience alongside physical practice. The style appeals to people interested in energy work and meditation rather than purely postural yoga. Sessions can feel more introspective and internally focused than vigorous flow classes.
