What is flotation therapy?

Flotation therapy is a relaxation practice in which a person floats in a sensory deprivation tank filled with warm Epsom salt water to reduce external stimuli and promote physical and mental recovery.

Float tanks contain warm water saturated with Epsom salt, allowing users to float effortlessly while experiencing minimal sensory input. The high salt concentration makes buoyancy automatic, removing the need for any physical effort. Inside the tank, external light and sound are blocked out, creating an environment where the nervous system can shift into a deeper state of rest.

The practice appeals to those seeking recovery from physical strain and mental fatigue. The weightless state reduces pressure on joints and muscles, while the magnesium in Epsom salt may support muscle relaxation and reduce inflammation. The sensory isolation also allows the mind to quiet, which many find valuable for stress relief and mental clarity.

Flotation therapy sessions typically last 60 to 90 minutes. Users enter a private tank, float in silence and darkness, and emerge when the session ends. Sessions can be standalone or part of a broader wellness program. Spa and wellness retreats in Cape Town often offer flotation therapy as a complementary service alongside massage, yoga, or other recovery-focused treatments.
